Where to Start?
Most people arrive thinking they need to be fit or have a martial arts background. They don’t. You pick up the techniques faster than you’d expect — and the group makes it easier than you think.
A friendly group of people — welcoming from day one
Well-paced classes — you’ll fit right in from day one
Mixed ages and fitness levels — no ego, no gym culture
Practical skills you can actually use — not sport, not competition
Krav Maga Global (KMG) is the leading international Krav Maga organisation. Being part of that network means consistent curriculum, internationally recognised progression, and instructors who are formally qualified and accountable to that standard — not just a local gym running its own programme.
How Does It Work?
Getting started is straightforward. Here’s what the first few steps look like from your side.
Pick a class time that works for you and show up in comfortable clothes. No equipment needed for your first session.
You’ll be welcomed, introduced to the group, and trained alongside everyone else. The first class gives you a clear picture of how it all works.
Twice a week is the most popular rhythm — but train at whatever pace works for you. Most people are surprised at how quickly they progress.
Over weeks and months you’ll notice it — in and out of training. The confidence that comes from knowing you can handle yourself.
No experience needed. Book your first session — we’ll guide you from there.
What Will You Learn?
Every technique is grounded in the KMG curriculum — practical, progressive, and built around how real confrontations actually happen.
Read situations early, avoid unnecessary conflict, and create distance before anything becomes physical.
Build effective striking fundamentals and learn to defend against common real-world attacks — developed under pressure, not just in theory.
What to do if you end up on the ground — defend, create space, and get back to your feet. A core part of complete self-defence training.
Develop movement and decision-making for situations involving more than one threat. Trained progressively — not thrown in at the deep end.
Your body needs to know what to do when your heart rate rises. Classes build that response gradually — which is where real capability comes from.
The KMG system includes defences against weapon threats — trained progressively using safety equipment in a controlled environment. It's one of the things that makes this training genuinely comprehensive.

Common Questions
Yes — most students at Krav Maga Auckland start with no martial arts background at all. The KMG curriculum is built to take you from zero experience to genuine self-defence capability through well-paced, progressive training. Classes are structured so that beginners train alongside more experienced students without feeling out of their depth. You don’t need experience. You just need to show up.
No. Classes are demanding and you will get fitter — but fitness is a by-product of training, not a prerequisite. Students arrive at every level of fitness and build from there. The training is scaled to where you are, not where you think you should be. Most people are surprised at what they can do right from the first session.
Krav Maga Auckland trains at 47 Birkenhead Avenue, Birkenhead, Auckland 0626 — on Auckland’s North Shore. We’re easily accessible from Birkenhead, Northcote, Glenfield, Takapuna, Albany, and across the wider North Shore area. Street parking is available on Birkenhead Avenue and surrounding streets.
Comfortable, flexible workout clothes — something you can move freely in. Trainers or flat-soled shoes are fine. No special equipment is needed for your first session. If you continue training you’ll gradually build up a kit list (gloves, pads, and so on) but there’s no upfront gear requirement to get started.
Krav Maga is particularly effective for women because it’s built around principles — awareness, de-escalation, and practical response — rather than raw strength or size. The techniques are designed to work regardless of the physical disparity between attacker and defender. Many women train at Krav Maga Auckland and the training builds real confidence both in and out of class. We also offer a dedicated Women’s Self-Defence programme — ask us about it.
Krav Maga Global is the leading international Krav Maga organisation, founded by Eyal Yanilov — one of the most senior Krav Maga instructors in the world.
