What do I need to bring or wear to my first Krav Maga class?

One of the small but surprisingly common worries before a first class is not knowing what to bring or wear. Many people overthink this, especially if they haven’t trained before.

The good news is that you don’t need anything complicated to get started.

For clothing, comfortable exercise wear is enough. A t-shirt and shorts or leggings that allow you to move freely work well. Training is practical, so clothing that you’d normally wear to a gym session is perfectly suitable.

Footwear depends on the class, but beginners are usually guided clearly on what’s expected before they arrive. If shoes are worn, they’re typically clean trainers used only indoors. If training is barefoot, that will be explained in advance.

You don’t need any special equipment for your first class. Protective gear and training equipment are usually introduced later, once you’re familiar with the basics and know what’s appropriate for you. Starting simple helps reduce pressure and lets you focus on learning.

It’s also a good idea to bring water and arrive a few minutes early. Having a moment to settle in, ask questions, and get oriented can make the experience feel much more relaxed.

Many beginners worry about standing out because they don’t have the “right” gear. In reality, most people start with very similar basics, and no one expects new students to arrive fully equipped.

For those training on the North Shore, beginners often start through the Essentials course in Birkenhead, which explains what to expect and helps people ease into training before moving into regular classes.

The main thing to remember is that preparation doesn’t need to be perfect. Turning up comfortable and open to learning is more than enough to get started.
