This training video demonstrates defence against an overhand knife stab, taught as part of the Krav Maga Global (KMG) Level 1 Diploma curriculum taught in our Krav Maga Regular Classes. The technique is also introduced and developed in our Krav Maga Essentials course, giving beginners a structured and safe way to learn core knife-defence principles.
In this knife defence drill you'll see:
Training demonstration filmed at Krav Maga Auckland. Techniques shown are taught progressively under instructor supervision.
In Krav Maga, defence against an overhand knife stab focuses on recognising danger early and responding decisively to a committed attack. Rather than relying on complex movements, the defender learns to simultaneously defend and counter-attack. This reduces the chance of repeated strikes and helps disrupt the attacker’s effectiveness and intent. The goal is to developing practical responses that work for everyday people.
At Krav Maga Global at Level 1, this technique introduces core principles that appear throughout the Krav Maga system: awareness, simultaneous defence and attack, forward pressure, and rapid transition to safety.
This video shows a controlled training drill with safety equipment. Knife defence is high-risk and context-dependent therefore Krav Maga training prioritises awareness, avoidance, and escape wherever possible. Techniques are always taught progressively with safety equipment (rubber knives) and close coaching by experienced and certified Krav Maga instructors.
We teach from the tried and tested Krav Maga Global international curriculum. This has a comprehensive set of techniques and tactics to deal with knife threats and attacks.
Defences against overhead (and underhand) knife attacks are:
